Marta Deskur (b. 1962, Kraków)
is a visual artist working across photography, video, installation, and performative practices. Her work unfolds at the intersection of conceptual art, critical visual studies, and an anthropology of everyday life. At the core of her practice lie relationships — interpersonal, interspecies, familial, political, as well as those embedded in the subtle, often invisible tensions that shape social reality.

Deskur has developed a distinct visual language grounded in reduction, non-correspondence, and shifts of perspective. Her photographs and videos frequently employ neutral, “non-locational” backgrounds that isolate human or non-human figures, allowing them to become carriers of emotion, narrative, and conflict. This strategy of deliberate neutrality reveals social mechanisms rather than concealing them; it makes visible what is ordinarily obscured.

Deskur often constructs alternative mythologies and revisions of dominant narratives, confronting viewers with what has been suppressed, marginalised, or left unnamed. Her works explore power and vulnerability, care and violence, and the tensions between cultural frameworks and lived experience. While photography remains central, she consistently expands her formal vocabulary: using ceramic tiles (Fanshon, 2002), artist books (Sfinks i Maskotka, 1999), internet-based projects (New Baby?), site-specific actions, multimedia installations, and immersive spatial environments.

Between 2012 and 2019 she developed Manju Goes to Poland, a long-term project examining cultural relations between India (Tamil Nadu) and Poland. Her sustained engagement with social and cross-cultural dynamics produces works that operate simultaneously as documentation, analysis, and formal experiment.

Deskur has exhibited widely in Poland and internationally, including at the Sonje Museum of Contemporary Art in Gwangju (South Korea), 400 Gallery in Chicago (USA), Museum Bochum, Von der Heydt-Museum in Wuppertal, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (NBK), and at Art Unlimited, Art 35 Basel, among many others. She lives and works in Warsaw and Rudnik nad Sanem.
